Dear Braeside Families,
It was a fantastic week at school!! Students were excited to be back in the building and staff were happy to see them. It was fantastic to see how quickly students jumped back into classroom routines on Tuesday morning.
Thank you to the families who attended the School Council meeting on Tuesday evening. School Council has three upcoming events that they need volunteers for! Please email Kyla Anderson at braesidechair@gmail.com or complete the volunteer form on the School Council website (link here) if you are able and to support any of the following:

Thank you in advance to all the family members who volunteer their time for these initiatives. We know our school community is stronger when the school and families work together to make fun things happen!
Speaking of volunteers.... Ms. Ranger, our Learning Commons Assistant, is looking for volunteers to help in the Learning Commons with shelving and organizing books and materials as well as some reorganization and labelling she is working on. Our Learning Commons is a fantastic place to spend time!! If you would like to volunteer, please email Mrs. Bennett (mabennett@cbe.ab.ca) or Ms. Ranger (plranger@cbe.ab.ca).
On Monday there will be a partial solar eclipse visible in Calgary, and as a result we will be adjusting our lunch recess slightly. On Monday only, students will be going out for lunch recess from 11:20 to 11:45 and they will then be staying inside from 11:45 to 12:30. Daycare staff will be picking up students who attend lunch at the community centre and students will be reminded to not look at the sun when walking there or back. If your child attends lunch at the community centre and you do not want them leaving that day you must email the school (mabennett@cbe.ab.ca and jlblasken@cbe.ab.ca) as well as Louise (braechildcare@gmail.com) to let us know. Please note, students who do not normally stay for lunch at Braeside will be charged the $5.00 drop-in fee that day.
Below is the message you should have received from CBE regarding the partial solar eclipse:
Precautions for the Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8
On Monday, April 8 a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m.
We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner.
During this partial solar eclipse on Monday, we would like to invite all students to remain at school during the lunch break. Please send a lunch with your child. If students are not participating in educational activities around the event, schools may choose to have students will be involved in supervised indoor activities.
If you decide that your child will walk home for lunch on Monday, please discuss with your child not to look at the sun to protect his/her eyes from damage by the solar eclipse.
During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional.
For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.
Enjoy the weekend!
