Dear Braeside Families,

We are really looking forward to the next month of school!!

Next week we are excited to welcome our ‘Passion for Glass’ residency where students are going to have the opportunity to learn about creating art with glass.  Following this they will be making an individual glass piece that will be added to a whole school mural.  This mural will be showcased in the school as a legacy project.  Thank you to School Council for funding this residency, we know students will enjoy this unique opportunity.  (Our next School Council meeting is Tuesday February 4 at 6:30 pm in the Learning Commons).

In addition to our, ‘Passion for Glass’ residency we are also looking forward to an upcoming initiative called Braeside U!

This year our whole school focus has centered around “What’s Our Story?” Students have been involved in a variety of learning tasks that have helped students learn about themselves and build connections with others. To strengthen these connections with other students and teachers, who may not be in their class/grade, we have decided to offer some fun and exciting opportunities for students. We are calling this Braeside U!

These learning opportunities will offer students the opportunity to explore different topics and cross-curricular competencies such as: thinking critically, identifying and solving complex problems, applying multiple literacies, demonstrating good communication skills, working cooperatively with others and learning or building upon skills they are interested in learning and want to learn more about. It will also be a great way to continue developing a growth mindset.

Each group will be led by a teacher in the school and will consist of students from more than one grade. Prior to the first day, teachers will be provided with a Powerpoint that they will use to explain each of the “options” to their students. Students will then be asked to choose their top 4. From this information, students will be organized into groups.

Braeside U will take place on Tuesday afternoons from 2:00-2:30 on February 11, 18, 25th and March 4.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to investigate a variety of high interest topics as well as create and collaborate with new students and staff members.

The school and school council are excited to announce that we will be holding a Family Dance on Thursday, February 20 from 5:30-7:30pm! Tickets purchased in advance are $5 per person and students can purchase tickets for themselves and their family members at lunch on February 4 and 10 (please send your child with cash to purchase tickets at school these two days). Tickets purchased at the door will be $7. We do have capacity limits, so please plan to get your tickets in advance so you don't miss out!

Pizza is available for purchase in advance through the Healthy Hunger system - please log in to order for your kiddo and other family members (Kindergarten students should be visible under the “staff” classlist). Drinks and glowsticks will be available for purchase at the event, and there are plans for an awesome face painting station!

We will need your help to make this a success - please consider signing up for a volunteer role!

**Please note that all children will need to be accompanied by an adult**

Please see the attached flyer.

Grade 5 / 6 Families

Please don’t forget that John Ware’s Open House is today from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.  Students and families will have an opportunity to visit classrooms, meet staff and learn about the different things they have to offer.

As you already know, your child will be attending Outdoor School from May 6 – 8 (overnight).  Students are starting to get excited!  Woot!  Please plan on attending a mandatory parent meeting on April 10.  The fee (approximately $300) will be posted next month in your MyCBE account.  Please watch for that.  If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Take care,
