Dear Braeside Families,

Even though it was a very short school week lots of great learning tasks occurred over the last two days!

School Development Plan

This year our School Development Plan (SDP) is focusing on using assessment to drive student learning forward.  One strategy teachers are going to be using is ensuring that they clearly articulate learning intentions when introducing new lessons or activities.  It is essential that students know what they are doing and why.  One-way teachers will be doing this is using “I can” statements.  For example, this week the grade 5 / 6 students were working on developing their editing skills and in the classroom an anchor chart was posted stating, “I can use: capitals, ending punctuation, commas, abbreviations and apostrophes”.  Following a picture prompt writing activity, students were tasked with going back through their work to ensure they had done this correctly.  Over the next few weeks students will progress from writing skills such as editing to using descriptive and juicy language.  We will see anchor charts used by students that have “I can” statements like, “I can use Red Flag and Juicy Words” in my writing.  If your child is in grades 5 or 6 ask them how this editing activity went.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Our first set of Parent -Teacher Conferences will be held on November 28 (in-person from 3:30 PM – 8:00 PM) and on November 29 (in-person or online from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM).  Booking opens on November 22 at 4:00 PM through your MyCBE account.  If you have not yet set up your MyCBE account, please do so ASAP to ensure you are able to book a conference.  We encourage students to attend these conferences with their family members.  If you require support setting up your MyCBE account, please call or email Ms. Blasken (jlblasken@cbe.ab.ca

Winter Fair

Please plan on attending the School Council Winter Fair on Thursday December 5 from 5 PM to 7 PM. We know that families will have a great time connecting with one another.  If you have purchased a Christmas Tree, they will be available for pick up that night (https://realtrees.ca/braeside/).  Thank you to all the families who have already purchased a Christmas Tree.  There will also be a Bake Sale, a photo booth, a presentation from the Div. 1 choir, a student art and craft sale and hot chocolate.  Let’s get festive!    If you would like to donate baking for the Bake Sale, please bring it to the school on Dec. 4 or 5 wrapped and ready to sell with an ingredient list.  All proceeds from the Bake Sale will go towards the grade 5 / 6 overnight trip in May.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.
