Dear Braeside Families

It has been another wonderful week of learning at Braeside School!!  Please check out your child’s classroom Instagram account to see pictures of learning in action!

One thing that really stood out is how amazing our grade 1 and 2 students are doing with their reading and writing skills.  It is hard work learning how to read and write.  It takes dedication and lots and lots of practice.  Our youngest students must be willing to take risks and persevere when engaging in these types of learning tasks and our teachers must structure them in a supportive way.  Ask your child what types of learning tasks they have had to work really hard at in school lately and encourage them to keep on going.  It is essential that students are faced with challenging situations and supported to work through them.

We shared earlier this year that we are exploring the question, “What’s Our Story?”  In September we started this work with students engaging in self-reflections and self-portraits and we are now looking to expand on this by having students connect further with other students in the school.  Part of this work will include buddy classes getting together to teach each other new things and work on different projects.  Some of our grade 1 / 2 and 5 / 6 buddy classes came together yesterday and the older students taught the younger students a new math game.  Students typically LOVE getting together with their buddies and it is often a highlight of their day.  Ask your child if they have met their “Braeside Buddy” yet and what they might look forward to doing with them when they get together.

We have a fun and exciting residency starting at our school on October 21. Alien Inline will be joining us and all classes from Kindergarten to grade 6 will be enjoying three, 60-minute sessions with the instructors. They will be learning new skills while building on those they may already have. It is recommended that students bring their own safety helmets. Knee and elbow pads along with wrist cards will be supplied by Alien Inline as they know they are safe and have passed inspection. Safety is very important so as to avoid injury. Your child’s teacher will also be sending out a School Messenger message with some additional information and the dates which your child will be participating so that they can be dressed accordingly. (Please see the Parent Letter Attached for more information). A big thank you to our School Council for providing the funds needed to provide this residency experience for our students.

October’s Monthly Mantra is “I am thankful” and this weekend is a perfect opportunity to pause and reflect on what we are thankful/grateful for. In our front entrance students have been starting to add what they are thankful for to a display that we created. We hope to keep adding more ideas during the month. Here at Braeside we are thankful for our amazing students and supportive parents!

We hope that everyone enjoys the long weekend and has a chance to get together with friends and family!
